About Dental Crowns

While most commonly used to restore a tooth where a cavity is too large to be filled, dental crowns can also be used to fix damaged or broken teeth, severe discoloration, or even improve your overall "bite", and gum health.  Dental crowns, also known as  "caps" are coverings placed over the whole tooth after the decay or damage is removed. They can be made of metal, porcelain, ceramic, or other materials, but for the front teeth most patients want a material that looks as natural as possible. For more aesthetic purposes, porcelain and ceramic are used to match the natural color of the teeth. Dr. Patel of Houston Heights Dentistry can recommend the best dental crown material for both appearance and functionality.

Dental Crowns - What to Expect

Dr. Patel first prepares the tooth by removing any decay and existing old filling, then takes digital pictures and impressions of the tooth that will be sent to the dental laboratory. A temporary crown will be placed on the tooth while the custom crown is being made. When the permanent crown is returned to the office, Dr. Patel will carefully fit and set it on the tooth with some adjustments for a more comfortable fit before permanently bonding it.

Dental Crowns - Treatment Aftercare

Some patients may experience temporary discomfort or tooth sensitivity, but most patients do not usually have any pain after a crown is placed. With proper home care and regular dental cleanings and exams, a crown may last for 10 – 40 years depending on the material of the crown, and the care of the tooth. In some cases, if the decay is extensive and has gotten too close to the nerve, a root canal may be needed either before or after the crown is placed.

Dental Crowns - Insurance Coverage

If the crown is considered medically necessary, in-network dental insurance typically covers 50% of the cost, so our office will check with your insurance to determine your coverage and out-of-pocket expenses. Estimated costs, payment options, and financing available through our office can be discussed during your consultation with our experienced administrative team.
