About Dental Bonds and Contour
At Houston Heights Dentistry, Dr. Neela Patel uses dental bonding and contouring to reshape and refine the shape of teeth to produce an enhanced smile. Dental bonding is a procedure that uses plastic resin to cover up any flaws. The resin is matched to the natural color of the patient's teeth. It is a simple procedure that can make a drastic aesthetic difference. Dental contouring helps adjust the shape of the teeth to make them look either longer or shorter, as well as smoother and more even. Whether you are wanting to fix a chipped or misshapen tooth or remove jagged edges, dental bonding and contouring can help you achieve a straighter, more beautiful smile.
Veneers can also be used to achieve the same type of results. The downside to bonding is that it can be stained by coffee, wine, and sodas while veneers will not stain. The plus is bonding is less expensive than veneers.
"Dr. Neela Patel and staff are wonderful. I've been going here for 20 years and even though it is out of the way from my work and home it's worth the drive."- D.A. / Google / Sep 18, 2018
"Great overall experience. Dr. Patel and her staff really take amazing care of their patients and make you feel welcome and at ease the minute you step into the office. Today she squeezed me into her already busy schedule to fix me up with a new veneer that broke off my tooth just hours before. They did an excellent job! In the two plus years I’ve been going to HHD, I’ve never been disappointed. Here are a few more highlights: none of her shots ever hurt, she always calls you in the evening to check that everything is ok, competitive prices."- J.S. / Google / Oct 03, 2019
"Great doctor and hygienist! Probably the best, most knowledgeable dentist I’ve been to!"- N.D. / Google / Sep 30, 2019

What to Expect
Dental bonding and contouring is usually a fast procedure for most patients so it can be performed in our office with little or no anesthesia. To prepare the tooth for proper bonding, the top layer of the tooth will be etched and conditioning gel will be applied. Before this step, the resin itself is matched to the patient's natural tooth color and carefully painted onto the enamel. A special light is used to harden and cure the resin until it fully covers the treatment area. Once set, the resin is buffed and polished to make them look smooth and natural. The natural teeth can also be polished and contoured with special dental instruments to remove sharp edges and even out the edges of the teeth.
Patients may find that their newly bonded and contoured teeth feel a little weird at first, but they gradually become accustomed to the new shape and feeling. To prolong the life of dental bonding, patients should maintain regular dental visits for cleanings and exams, and also maintain a good home care routine with brushing and flossing. After bonding and contouring treatments, patients should avoid foods and drinks that can stain, as well as smoking to keep the resin from staining. Also, patients should be careful biting into foods with their front teeth in order to keep the resin bonded areas from chipping. With good care, bonding and contouring can last 3 – 10 years before another treatment may be needed to maintain results.
If dental bonding and contouring is needed to fix a tooth, dental insurance may cover some of the cost. If the procedure is only for cosmetic improvements, insurance will not cover the cost. Based on your needs, our administrative team will determine what your dental insurance will cover and what will be charged to you directly. We offer many payment and financing options to make dental bonding and contouring affordable for our patients.
